Intersex Fish in the Sudbury
نویسنده
چکیده
In recent decades, scientists have discovered that the presence of human hormones and hormonemimicking chemicals in rivers, lakes, and streams can affect the endocrine systems of fish. These chemicals can feminize male fish, masculinize female fish, impact reproduction, and potentially affect the population’s ability to survive. This working paper attempts to summarize the local findings of a large federal study titled: “Evidence of estrogenic endocrine disruption in smallmouth and largemouth bass inhabiting Northeast U.S. National Wildlife Refuge Waters: a reconnaissance study” (Iwanowicz et al., 2013). Other studies of endocrine disrupting chemicals in the Assabet River were carried out in 2009-13 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), OARS, and UMass Amherst. These will be discussed in future Working Papers.

An evidence of intersex males in Jajroud River Loach, Oxynoemacheilus bergianus (Derjavin, 1934)
In the present study, JajroudRiverloach, Oxynoemacheilus bergianus (Derjavin, 1934), was examined monthly for a previous observation of oocyte presence within testes tissues. Accordingly, the gonad development in O. bergianus is examined histologically. Although our data show typical fish gonad development and differentiation in female and some male individuals, some males sho...

Disruption in gonadal development of wild roach living in U.K. rivers receiving large volumes of treated sewage effluent is manifest in a variety of ways, ranging from malformation of the germ cells and/or reproductive ducts to altered gamete production. Intersex fish were also found to have an altered endocrine status and an elevated concentration of plasma vitellogenin. Gonadal growth was inh...
متن کاملWidespread occurrence of intersex in black basses (Micropterus spp.) from U.S. rivers, 1995-2004.
Intersex occurrence in freshwater fishes was evaluated for nine river basins in the United States. Testicular oocytes (predominantly male testes containing female germ cells) were the most pervasive form of intersex observed, even though similar numbers of male (n=1477) and female (n=1633) fish were examined. Intersex was found in 3% of the fish collected. The intersex condition was observed in...
متن کاملThe Consequences of Feminization in Breeding Groups of Wild Fish
BACKGROUND The feminization of nature by endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is a key environmental issue affecting both terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. A crucial and as yet unanswered question is whether EDCs have adverse impacts on the sustainability of wildlife populations. There is widespread concern that intersex fish are reproductively compromised, with potential population-level cons...
متن کاملIntersex in feral indigenous freshwater Oreochromis mossambicus, from various parts in the Luvuvhu River, Limpopo Province, South Africa.
This study reports on intersex in Oreochromis mossambicus, an indigenous fish species inhabiting most aquatic systems throughout South Africa (SA). Male fish were collected from three sites in the Luvuvhu River, Limpopo Province, SA: Albasini Dam (AD), Nandoni Dam (ND), and Xikundu Weir (XW). The latter two sites are situated in a currently dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) sprayed area. ...
